Today's civilization does not make room for the elderly. Yet they still form the family and society. After the figure of the mother, father and children, Pope Francis makes us reflect on the current problematic condition of the elderly. Continuation of Pope Francis' catechesis on the family, with P. Justolat Rafaralahimboa:

At present, older people also face problems in society. In developed countries, there are places where older persons are welcomed and accompanied, but in poor or disadvantaged countries such as those among us, they remain with their families but often seem to be marginalized or poorly treated. These relatives need our respect and support because they have given us life.  Respect for these elders confirms our obedience and respect for God's commandments (cf. Ecclesiastes 3:12-14).

Thanks to the progress of medicine life-spans have increased: but society has not “expanded” to life! The number of elderly has multiplied, but our societies are not organized well enough to make room for them, with proper respect and practical consideration for their frailty and their dignity. While we are young, we are led to ignore old age, as if it were a disease to keep away from; then when we become old, especially if we are poor, if we are sick and alone, we experience the shortcomings of a society programmed for efficiency, which consequently ignores its elderly. And the elderly are a wealth not to be ignored.
