The church celebrates on this January 27 the memory of Sainte Angela of Merici, founders of Ursulines. Born in 1474 in Desenzano, near Lake Garda. Her parents, devout Christians, wishing that their children can live the beatitudes in the Glory of God.
To fulfill her wishes, her paternal house was transformed into a place where everybody can pray and work under the eyes of God. Pious readings or reading of the lives of the saints ended each family day. Angela was in no way satisfied with this family piety but lived in addition to rigorous sacrifices and at the age of 9 consecrated her purity to God. Her paternal uncle takes her home but this one also died six years later. At the age of 22, Angela entered the Third Order of Saint Francis of Assisi.
In the year 1506, while she was working in the field, she saw a light and a ladder going up from earth to heaven. From this, a multitude of virgins accompanied by angels ascended to heaven. One of the virgins turned to her and said: "Angela, know that it is God who gives you this vision so that you may know that before your death you will found a congregation of virgins in Brescia". Twenty years later this vision was fulfilled and the grace of God accompanied Angela in this mission. On November 25, 1535, the first three nuns of the Order took their vows: poverty, chastity and obedience. Angela chose St. Ursula as patroness of her foundation.
God granted Angela special graces such as the mastery of Latin without having studied it; the ability to explain in a captivating way the most difficult passages of Sacred Scripture; the ability to clarify questions related to faith. She spent the last years of her life on spiritual pilgrimages. Angela died on January 27, 1540, and during the three days of the vigil, the people of Brescia saw a glow above the church where her remains were exposed. Pope Pius VII canonized Angela Merici in 1807.
