Amoebiasis is one of the most deadly parasitic diseases in the world (after malaria and bilharzia). Around 10% of the world's population is thought to be infected by parasitic amoebae of the Entamoeba genus, the most pathogenic of which is Entamoeba histolytica, the agent of amoebiasis. Transmission: via faeces, poorly cleaned food and various types of dirt; it enters the mouth, travels to the intestines and develops there, burrowing through the intestinal wall. Symptoms: Abdominal pain and bloating, prolonged feeling of fullness, frequent diarrhoea and possibly blood loss... Hygiène et santé’ programme, broadcast on Don Bosco radio.

Bilharzia is a disease that exists and continues to exist, and initiatives have been put in place to combat it in 19 districts of the island through the distribution of medicines. The national event lasted 5 days, from 12 to 16 May 2025. Bilharzia, also known as schistosomiasis, is a parasitic disease caused by flatworms of the genus Schistosoma.
