April 22 - Alexandre is a saint of the Lyon hagiographic tradition. He is said to have been martyred in Lyon in 178, one year after the group of martyrs of Lyon.
Alexander, of Greek origin, is a young man born in the middle of the 2nd century and living in Lyon. Professing the Christian religion, he escaped persecution against the Christians in 177, during which Saint Blandine and Bishop Pothin, among others, perished, by hiding outside the city, in the house of a Christian widow named Lucie in the suburb of Vaise.
He stayed there for a few months, but when he was denounced, he was arrested as he tried to escape. Thrown into prison and then interrogated and tortured by the Roman governor, he refused to recant his faith and was sentenced to death. Alexander was crucified two days later. According to some sources, thirty-four other Christians were executed with him.
