In those times, Charles Martel plundered the Church's goods. He bribed priests and bishops to share the Church's revenues with him. Wishing to rectify the situation, Pépin le Bref, son of Charles Martel, appointed Abel, from the monastery of Lobbes in Belgium, bishop of Reims. But the bishop he was to replace did not allow him to exercise his office for three years. Depressed and tired, Abel retired to a monastery where he compensated with prayer for what he could not accomplish as bishop.

There is also another Abel in salvation history. This is Abel, the younger son of Adam and Eve, who was jealous and murdered by his older brother Cain because he found grace in the eyes of God.
