Sunday 25 October 2020 - 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 22, 34-40 - If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, says the Lord; my Father will love him, and we will come to him.

God's word today speaks to us about love and respect for others. God wants us to broaden the subjects of our love and respect: it is good to love and respect our friends or fellow countrymen, but it is not enough, we must look at the wider world by including the poor and the oppressed. To love our neighbour means to seek his good, to wish him well before assisting him in his vital needs: food, clothing, to be always present at his side at the right moments...

This love of the other is necessarily combined with the love of God. This is the novelty brought by Jesus: we cannot love our neighbour without loving God. Love of neighbour that does not start from God would be a limited love, empty of meaning, because it is only by loving God that we can love all humanity. This means that the love of God is the reference point for the love of neighbour.
