The people are thirsty for salvation, the Malagasy want to improve and progress in many ways, but this is the fault: the people are not united, intimidation and barbarism are spreading and rampant... They need priests, real priests, not functionaries of God. So we are encouraged not to depend on the things of the earth, but to use them to help our friends, that is, all human beings without exception. This means that we need a renewal from within.

Until the age of 12, Jean apparently received a traditional education. His father wanted him to learn, not only Muslim works, but also those of the Greeks.
